Blessings and Exorcisms
Studies on the De Benedictionibus and on the De Exorcismis
This recently released volume presents the papers presented at the XII Fota International Liturgical Conference held in 2019. Reflecting on blessings and exorcisms in the Old and New Testaments, and on the significance of exorcisms in the public ministry of Jesus, and on its importance for the early Christian Church: the book provides a theological definition of exorcism, as well as examining the post Second Vatican Council revisions of the rites of exorcism and blessings.
Rev. Joseph Briody, ordained in 1995, is a priest of the diocese of Raphoe (Donegal, Ireland). He is a Professor of Sacred Scripture and part of the priestly formation team at St. John’s Seminary, Boston MA. He attained his (STL) at St. Patricks College, Maynooth, his (SSL) at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome, and his (STD) at the Boston College School of Theology and Ministry.

This volume collects the papers given at the Fourteenth Fota International Liturgical Conference, held in 2023, on the centrality of the concept of sacrifice in understanding the Eucharistic liturgy. The subject is treated from various biblical, theological, liturgical and historical perspectives, ranging from how the Mass fulfils the sacrifices of the Old Testament, to aspects of Joseph Ratzinger’s theology of the Eucharist, to the reform of the offertory in the Mass, and to the effects of modern liturgical reform on ritual itself. These proceedings are an important contribution to the ongoing post-conciliar recovery of the Church’s perennial teaching on the sacrifice of the Mass, a teaching deeply rooted in both scripture and tradition.
Matthew Hazell is an independent scholar with a particular interest in the reform of the liturgy after the Second Vatican Council. He has an M.A. in Biblical Studies (Research) from the University of Sheffield (UK) and is an Associate Member of the Society for Catholic Liturgy.

As the proceedings of the eleventh Fota International Liturgy Conference, held in 2018, this book is a polydisciplinary study of the Church's constant prayer, the divine office or the liturgy of the hours. Touching on its origin and development, it illustrates the manner in which the psalm cursus evolved, the biblical, hagiographical and patristic readings were chosen and adapted for use in the divine office, as well as identifying the principles underlying the various reforms undergone by the Breviary throughout its long history. It shows the importance of antiphons and hymns for the sung office. The role of Sacrosanctum concilium is considered along with some aspects of the post-conciliar reform of the office and the application of the principles established in the conciliar texts.

It is hoped that Resourcing the Prayers of the Roman Liturgy: Patristic Sources, will help people enter more and more into the Sacred Liturgy as they come to understand its ancient sources and venerable antiquity. A greater appreciation of what we have received brings a stronger realization that the Liturgy is not something we invent. It is something we receive as gift: 'this is what I received from the Lord and in turn pass on to you' (1 Cor 11:23). Indeed it was the will of the Fathers of the Second Vatican Council that the rites would 'be restored to the vigor which they had in the days of the holy Fathers.’

This book seeks to provide a depth of insight into the vocation of the lay person in the Church and world. Its aim is to afford a theological, spiritual and pastoral foundation for a more profound understanding of the royal priesthood of the faithful. Hopefully this volume will equip the lay person to take up his or her role confidently in the Church and the world. It highlights the gift and call of Baptism and reveals the Church’s rich vision for the lay apostolate.
In presenting the Church’s vision, this work seeks also to clarify the distinct nature of the priesthood of baptism. It clears the ground for a proper understanding of the complementarity between the royal priesthood of all the faithful and the ministerial priesthood. The teachings of the Second Vatican Council recognised the need for a clear understanding of the ministerial priesthood and how it differs from the common priesthood of the baptised ‘in essence and not only in degree.’
